History
Before Ecowise Environmental: 1990 – 1996
Before Ecowise Environmental, there was Ecowise Hydrology and Environmental Services, and Ecowise Scientific.
Both services were operating as business units of ACTEW Corporation from 1990, while undertaking consultancies throughout Australia and overseas.
In 1995 to 1996, hydrology projects were undertaken on mining projects in Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Indonesia with other hydrological work undertaken on Christmas Island and Cocos Island. Over this period the water quality laboratory also performed work for many clients throughout New South Wales. The clear direction for the new company was for Ecowise to expand throughout Australia and overseas.
Ecowise Environmental was incorporated on 31 May 1996 and commenced trading as a wholly-owned subsidiary of ACTEW Corporation Limited on 1 July 1996.
Ecowise Environmental in the beginning
Until 1998, the Ecowise laboratory was based in Holt, Canberra at ACTEW's wastewater treatment plant, before moving to a new purpose-built laboratory in Fyshwick.
The move to Fyshwick brought together the hydrology and environmental services and Ecowise Scientific, with the hydrographic and engineering groups who were already located in Fyshwick. This brought the staff total to 65.
Ecowise Environmental now
Ecowise has grown rapidly over the past five years, with the acquisition of a number of businesses across Australia. This international business, now with more than 400 staff members, is a true player in the environmental markets. As the business grows, so too do the opportunities within Ecowise and the value that we can create for our clients.
Ecowise Environmental is jointly owned by the ActewAGL Distribution partners: ACTEW Distribution Limited and Jemena Networks (ACT) Pty Ltd (formerly Alinta GCA Pty Ltd).
